Weekends are for camping, whenever we can get away. We often take family. One of our favourite places to go is Pillar Lake Resort near Falkland BC. On this trip we took our youngest daughter and her two boys. We also had a furry visitor. We named him George - George the Gopher.
He kept popping his head out and
watching everything we were doing. He was not at all afraid. He seemed curious more than
anything. I was surprised how we were able to continue with the things you do around a campsite and he just hung out and watched us.
Bacon fat and fishing
So my personal camp chef Ken was outside preparing a breakfast feast of bacon and
eggs. As he cooked the bacon, he would drain the bacon fat into a tin can. Without thinking, he left the can under the BBQ and off they went fishing - Ken, our daughter and the boys. One of them had been nagging Grandpa since March to take him fishing and
last this was the day. The little guy enjoyed every minute out in the boat. They didn’t catch a fish but our grandson did get a
nibble.
While on the water, they happened to look up into the trees
and spotted an eagle. (Look real close and you'll spot the eagle's white head in the middle of the photo) It's one of the joys of camping. I believe you spell it n-a-t-u-r-e.
Now back to George the gopher
When they got back to our campsite, Ken
noticed that he forgot to throw out the tin can with the bacon fat
inside. Empty!
We all hoped that George hadn’t eaten it because he would have had quite the belly ache for sure.
